June 29, 2024 What is going on with tablets these days? Not much in terms of innovation. Solid improvements in computing power. Relative price stability. Low demand compared to smartphones and laptop computers. Apple still dominates the tablet market overall, and the segment for professionals and creators. Samsung still leads the Android ecosystem. Microsoft still leads the niche of those looking for a tablet to be primarily used as a laptop. Amazon still dominates the budget streaming category.  If you don't have a tablet now, you probably don't need one. Like the majority of consumers, you may have realized that it is preferable to focus on having a solid phone and a solid laptop. No need for a third gadget that you need to charge and carry around. June 23, 2024 Who will win the debate tonight? Who won the debate? Who won the debate between Trump and Biden in 2024? Did Trump win the debate? Did Biden win the debate? Who lost the debate? Did Trump lose the debate? Did Biden lose the debate? Who will win the elections? How many electoral college votes are required to win the elections? Who scored more points with independent voters in key battleground states in the debate between Biden and Trump?  Those will be common search queries tonight and next week. June 21, 2024 We bought shares in Gilead Sciences, Inc (Nasdaq: GILD) yesterday because the pharmaceutical announced a supposed breakthrough in HIV Prevention. The stock price had already climbed 9% by the time we bought in. Today, the stock gained 3%, which is solid for one day and beat the overall market handsomely. By next week, we expect another 5% increase and will be time to exit the short term speculative position. Gilead Sciences, Inc. announced promising results from a trial study of its HIV-1 capsid inhibitor, lenacapavir. The twice-yearly injectable drug demonstrated 100% efficacy in preventing HIV in about 2,000 women tested in South Africa and Uganda.  The trial's key efficacy endpoints showed lenacapavir's superiority over once-daily oral Truvada® (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) and background HIV incidence. June 12, 2024 Yes, a college education is still worthwhile for the vast majority of humans, but keep in mind that not all college degrees are created equally and that AI will change everything. Advances in generative AI will render obsolete many degrees and professions in the near future. Unlike the Industrial Revolution, which displaced slaves and other hard laborers, the AI revolution will displace knowledge workers.  Some "cool" and high-paying jobs of today like software engineering will most likely be dominated by AI relatively soon. Interestingly, the trades requiring lots of knowledge and art will be the ones overtaken by the upcoming iterations AI. Don't think about what ChatGPT-4 can do. Think about what the 8th generation, the 16th generation, and so forth will be able to do. We hold long positions on exchange traded funds (ETFs) that mimic the performance of the S&P 500, the S&P Completion Index, the MSCI All Country World Investable Market Index, and cash. 80% of our investment portfolio is equally divided on those ETFs and cash in equal parts.
