Forget the wheel, fire, the light bulb, computers, and ChatGPT for just a moment. They were all made possible by three main inventions that changed everything. Meet the holy trinity of human innovation: Language; God; and Money.
🗣️ 1. Language: The Master Invention
Language is the master invention that made all others possible. Language is the code that unlocked civilization. Before tools, before towns, before history itself, humans communicated using gestures and sounds. With language, our ancestors coordinated hunts, organized tribes, and told stories to pass on knowledge from one generation to the next. Language allowed relatives and neighbors to cooperate with one another, strangers to become allies, and enemies to negotiate peace.
Language enables cooperation and competition, the twin engines of progress. Language lets us share ideas, issue commands, write laws, record history, and dream beyond the present. It creates identity and sense of community. It enabled trust and scaled leadership. Every social institution, from religions to corporations, rests on the structure of shared language.
No invention before or since has so fundamentally defined us. It's our precisely our advanced language skills what define us and set us apart from our fellow brothers and sisters in the rest of the animal kingdom.
2. God: The Invention of a Master
If language is the master invention, God is the invention of a master. If language explains our place in the animal kingdom, God is what we imagine displaces us from that kingdom making us something other than animals but spirited heirs of the kingdom of God. Where early humans feared the unknowns nature, they imagined supernatural powers in control of nature. Imagining a relationship with the powers above nature was individually comforting and collectively controlling. From a diverse pantheon of deities, the invention was later consolidated at least by some humans in one and only God.
God, as an eternal sum of all powers of nature, is the greatest conceptual invention of the human mind. Spirits and deities were supernatural placeholders for everything we couldn't understand. Over time, this evolved in some areas of the world into a singular, omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent force: the one and only God.
God give us individual comfort and collective control. God bounds tribes together with shared rituals and bonding practices that build community and promote civilization. Divine authority gave kings their crowns, prophets their words, and colonial empires their purpose. It shaped law, morality, art, war, and more.
God gave humans a sense of order in a chaotic world, and gives us a real tool for organizing a productive society.
💰 3. Money: The Master of Trade
Trade begins with trust, but trust doesn't scale easily even when using the same language and believing in the same God. That’s where money comes in. Not as metal or paper, but as a shared fiction to facilitate trust in trade. Money is a representative token (first physical and now digital) that allows us to value goods, pay debts, and save for the future.
Money facilitated markets, and markets fed and built civilizations. Money abstracts the concept of economic value, making it portable, divisible, and storable. Money allows for long-distance trade, complex contracts, and the rise of banking, credit, and capitalism.
Like language, money facilitates exchange of goods and services. Like God, money continues existing and helping us so long as we all believe in it. Money is symbolic yet it runs the world. It serves as the carrot and stick rewarding effort, motivating humans to make more and avoid losing it. Money measures perceived value and funds everything in the material world.
From a Master Creation to the Creation of a Master and the Masterful Motivation of Human Civilization
Language, God, and Money are three fundamental inventions that began in images within the human mind (imagination) but reshaped the external reality of the material world. They are not natural phenomena, but they now govern nature in a phenomenal way. Language shapes the cultural belief system that allows communication that creates community and civilization. God requires suspension of disbelief to heal and rule communities into civilization. Money cannot be disbelieved when everybody believes in it and how it communicates divine powers in the civilized world.
Language, God, and Money are master inventions facilitating almost every other invention in the human world. They are the software of human civilization. Like all great inventions, they are beneficial whe properly used, dangerous if misused, and utterly indispensable.
So next time you speak, pray, or pay remember that you’re using the tools that built and continue building the world.
