Artificial intelligence (AI) will solve many problems, and will create many more. AI will accelerate economic growth and create unprecedented opportunities for entrepreneurs, investors, and other wealth creators. AI will help us realize that everything artificial is 100% natural, and that artificial solutions can be better than non-artificial alternatives. Finally, AI will invite us to reflect on the nature of mythology, the mythological defense of nature, and the evolutionary shackles of pain / pleasure programming. AI will help us improve life on Earth and beyond.
Intelligence and the problem solving paradox
Intelligence is the ability to solve problems. Intelligence is what allows systems to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to solve problems. Intelligence is not magic. Intelligence depends on three main processes: (i) processing; (ii) patterning; and (iii) predicting. Processing data leads to identifying cause and effect patterns, which can be used to make predictions about how adjusting variables can lead to different outcomes and solutions.
AI is computerized intelligence. AI increases our problem-solving ability (intelligence). AI can process information in huge sets of data to mathematically identify patterns, and to statistically predict or suggest different outcomes. Just like a hand-held calculator helps us perform mathematical computations at speeds that are currently impossible for human brains, AI can processes data, identify patterns, and make predictions at speeds that far surpass the natural ability of humans.
The problem-solving paradox is that the more problems we solve, the more problems there are to be solved. Solving a problem creates more problems to solve in a seemingly endless cycle.
AI will accelerate economic growth
By solving problems and creating new problems to solve, AI will accelerate economic growth. In open market economies, entrepreneurs and investors are rewarded for bringing solutions to the marketplace. Since AI will help us identify and solve problems at higher speeds than what humans could do on their own, AI will accelerate economic growth. The economic expansion promoted by AI will be unprecedented in human history.
Technologies (tools and methods) such as machines and computers (digital machines) have proven to be economic multipliers and accelerators. Never before in human history we had AI machines capable of replicating and exceeding human intelligence.
AI will promote economic problem solving at speeds and scales never seen before in human history. The more solutions, the more problems to solve, for a virtuous cycle of economic expansion. AI will bring countless new money-making opportunities for entrepreneurs, investors, and all other wealth creators who benefit from trading solutions for profit.
The future of humanity should be more artificial.
Everything "artificial" (created by humans) is 100% natural because humans are 100% part of nature. Moreover, many artificial creations can be significantly superior and more convenient than their non-artificial alternatives.
Humans are not separate and apart from nature. Humans are part of nature. Therefore, everything that is created by humans is indirectly created by nature. While everything artificial is natural, the reverse does not hold true. Not everything natural is artificial.
Artificial is a subset of natural. While everything artificial is natural, not everything natural is artificial. Artificial is not the opposite of natural. The opposite of natural is unnatural or supernatural like in fiction and religious mythology. The opposite of artificial is simply non-artificial. When measured objectively, without the bias of religious or naturalistic mythology, many artificial creations are more effective and thus better than non-artificial alternatives.
Technology over mythology
Ignorance is the root of all problems. Problems such as global warming and aging are significant problems because we still don't know how to solve them economically and effectively. We do not have sufficient intelligence yet to solve these massive problems effectively. Once we develop knowledge and overcome ignorance, we can make the relevant problem disappear if we want to.
Of course, other problems will pop up in because ignorance is practically infinite. The more we learn, the more we realize the little that we know. The more information and knowledge that we generate to solve a problem, the more that such information becomes knowledge about new or previously unknown problems to solve.
In ancient times, mythology was the main human technology (tool and method) of choice to cope with ignorance. When faced with incomprehensible natural phenomena, including the brutally painful and merciless hunger games played by nature, humans invented deities and spirits that could fill in the gap between the known and the unknown.
Relying on intuition and anthropomorphism, humans assigned emotions and intentions to imaginary supernatural forces that were rationalized to be in control of humanity. Imaginary gods and spirits, some of which we have even expressly turned into comic superheroes (e.g. Thor), allowed humans to explain or address what they could not understand about the sadist and merciless nature in which they found themselves.
Pain and Pleasure Programming (PPP)
Humans, like all other animals, are controlled by the pain / pleasure programming (PPP) of life. All animals inherit PPP forcing them to avoid pain and to seek pleasure. In humans, the pain and pleasure levers or triggers are controlled by two emotions: fear and greed.
Humans are afraid of pain, and greedy of pleasure. These two emotions (fear and greed) explain everything--absolutely everything--that humans have ever done and do to this date. These two emotions explain why humans invented gods, why some humans consolidated all gods into one creator later marketed as a "father" figure, and why some humans venerate a "mother" nature.
Ancient human tribes invented full pantheons of deities and spirits to "explain" everything from the creation of the universe to the universal control of nature by supernatural forces. In Africa and the Middle East, some tribes consolidated all deities and spirits into "one and only" creator. Christianity later marketed that creator as a "father" of humanity. Motivated by the fear of suffering punishments and motivated by the greed of receiving privileges (blessings) on Earth and in an imaginary afterlife, billions of humans opt to believe in a mythological and imaginary god.
Over the years, many humans have realized that in the same way that it is absurd to believe in the mythology of multiple gods (polytheism), it is equally absurd to believe in the mythology of only one god (monotheism). However, many humans have defaulted into venerating an imaginary "mother" nature. To make matters worse, some humans believe both in a mythological heavenly "father" and a "mother" nature. That is anthropomorphism at its maximum expression, and due to PPP is prevalent worldwide to this date.
Unlike imaginary deities, nature does in fact exist. There are many things that humans don't understand about nature. However, it is abundantly clear that nature is not a caring "mother" worthy of veneration. Nature is a brutal force of random evolution and hunger game elimination. Humans come from nature, but nature is less than human. Artificial things (i.e. created by humans) can be superior than non-artificial ones.
The future of humanity should be artificial
It is time to realize that the future of humanity should be more artificial than non-artificial. That is, technological solutions smartly created by humans such as AI can be preferable to non-artificial solutions selected blindly by evolution without human intervention. Once humans can put mythology aside, including the blind veneration of a "mother" nature, humans can take full charge of creating an artificial and better future for life on Earth.
The future of life should strive to be artificially-enhanced and genetically modified. For example, instead of surrendering to faulty designs of nature, humans should leverage the power of AI to device artificial solutions that can help us live longer and better. For example, an artificial blood pump that can replace the biological heart can save lives and expand longevity.
There are no supernatural forces dictating our incredibly short lifespan under natural and non-artificial conditions. There is no supernatural order forcing humans to surrender to non-artificial nature. There is no fate prescribed by gods or a heavenly "father". Humans do not need to accept being born under a natural death sentence of "incurable" genetic diseases such as aging. Instead, humans should continue developing artificial solutions to the problems of nature. For example, using AI to scan and replace DNA errors before they accumulate and replicate in the compounded disease that we call aging would save lives. The examples can be practically infinite. Artificial solutions to natural problems can almost always be superior to non-artificial alternatives.
AI is our future
AI is an artificial technology (i.e. problem-solving tool and method created by humans). AI will help us process data, identify causal effect patterns, and make predictions that can be turned into actionable recommendations for future improvements.
The problems killing humans and spreading suffering on Earth are not caused or controlled by any imaginary gods, spirits, or supernatural forces. The problems are caused by the natural laws of physics and nature that we can decipher.
AI will help us continue deciphering the laws of physics and the laws of nature. AI will help us identify causes and effects (variables and constants) that we can adjust to improve life outcomes on Earth. We will do better with AI. We will continue developing artificial technologies (i.e. tools and methods created by humans and AI) to solve problems and improve the quality of life on planet Earth and beyond. You bet.
