Will AI eliminate jobs or create jobs?
That is a trick question because it should not be an "or" question. AI will both eliminate some jobs and create or generate new jobs. Everyone knows that. AI is old news by now. The AI financial bubble is still expanding, but it will burst sooner or later, maybe as soon as this summer 2025. AI is impressive, but as with everything else, the enthusiasm will fade over time.
Some people worry about losing their jobs to AI. To be sure, AI will eliminate many jobs, but will create far many more jobs directly and indirectly. Think about cars, calculators, and computers just to name three examples.
- Cars replaced horses and practically eliminated all horse-cart industry related jobs. For the most part you only see horse carts in tourism these days. However, look at the auto industry and the sheer amount of jobs that it created and that continues to create every day. Think about all the jobs in car manufacturing, car services, road construction, road maintenance, traffic accessories, construction, etcetera that are related to the automotive industry. There's even an entertainment component in car races and the like.
- Calculators. Hand-held calculators revolutionized calculation, essentially replacing manual calculation in all industries. It could have been thought that calculators would eliminate human jobs by being able to process mathematical calculations faster than any human. Instead of shrinking the calculation fields, calculators significantly expanded them. Calculators eased calculation tasks and in so doing contributed to an expansion of calculation in all fields, from accounting to education and science. Calculators increased exponentially the need for calculating all sorts of stuff.
- Computers. Computer science and computers themselves, of which AI is simply a continuation, eliminated many jobs and created a whole new industry that expanded all fields of human endeavor. Computers have created more jobs than any other technology and continue doing so. The whole AI revolution is a continuation of the computer revolution. Ask yourself a simple question. Were there more or better jobs before or after the rise of computers? The same answer will apply to AI, which is simply a continuation of the computer revolution.
Do not worry about losing your job to AI. Whatever the job may be, be sure that the underlying industry will grow because of AI. For sure, the AI revolution will eliminate many jobs, which will become obsolete. New and better jobs will be created practically overnight due to all the new doors opened by AI. That has been the story and history of all human technologies without exception, from simple machines to the wheel and all the way to computers and AI. While new technologies eliminate some jobs they always create more jobs.
Now you know it.
