When and where did AI begin?

Almost 80 years ago, in the mid 1950s, Dartmouth Professor  John McCarthy  coined the term Artificial Intelligence (AI) to describe calculators that could mimic human intelligence. Prior to joining Dartmouth faculty, McCarthy had studied mathematics in the California Institute of Technology, and had obtained a PhD in mathematics from Princeton University. In 1955,  Professor McCarthy and  Claude Shannon , a founder of  information theory  then at  Bell Labs , began to discuss the idea of hosting a Summer academic workshop to discuss AI.  On September 2, 1955, the workshop seminar was formally proposed by  McCarthy ,  Marvin Minsky ,  Nathaniel Rochester ,  and  Claude Shannon .  We propose that a 2-month, 10-man study of artificial intelligence be carried out during the summer of 1956 at Dartmouth College in  Hanover, New Hampshire .                     " The study is to proceed on the basis of the conjecture that every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can i
